UWS Sports Centre

pdf movie slideshow

UWS FM and the Penrith Campus of the University of Western Sydney commissioned BHA to redevelop their existing Indoor Sports Centre, to better meet the current needs of the University Staff and Students. The new upgraded Centre should provide a commercially viable facility available for the general public.

BHA’s initial masterplanning revealed some problems with the University’s original idea to add on to the existing structures. Our new concept included for a new 2 storey Building with links to the existing Student common areas adjacent the site, the existing Sports hall was then to be incorporated with the new facility.

By drawing heavily on our  experience in the design of gymnasiums and Health Clubs, we developed a free flowing, light filled series of spaces to house the various, weight training group fitness, and spin class components of the project program. Child minding, lounge areas, and refurbished amenities were also included.

The external facades feature a loose fit metal Clad structure which wraps around the generous Glazed areas which provide enhanced connection to external sports facilities and the wonderful views over the heavily treed campus. The building is located in a prominent position near the main entry to the campus, and the external treatment of the new building provides a crisp modern counterpoint tp the existing composition of older structures which feature heavy masonry facades.

The new gym lightly touches the ground, and reflects the energy of the activities inside.
