Our team specialises in the design of complex specialist bespoke 'one-off' teaching and learning projects. Over the last 10 years the Brewster Hjorth team has developed considerable expertise in the design of complex Education sector projects which include teaching laboratories and teaching simulation facilities for a wide range of course types and study modalities.

These facilities include amongst many others:
Dentistry teaching facilities simulation laboratories and teaching public clinics.
Biomedical sciences facilities with PC2 and PC3 laboratories and scenario based learning facilities.
I-learning facilities for media-rich group learning environments for post graduate intensive teaching.
Extended hours student accessible work environments.
Full digital access group and individual study spaces for a range of learning modalities.

teaching/ research facilities
We are experienced in the design, documentation and specification of a large range of teaching and research laboratories. Our project experience includes three CSIRO laboratory complexes, teaching laboratories for CSU, UWS, and UTS and food laboratories for major manufacturing companies, Lion Nathan and Dairy Farmers. We have recently completed:

multi-modal learning spaces
Our recent work for James Cook University and the University of Otago, New Zealand has concentrated on producing designs which encourage student participation on multiple levels by providing spaces for different types of teaching and learning. This is based on the research work of Dr. Ken Fisher of the University of South Australia. Student learning and interaction is accommodated in areas including classrooms, syndicate rooms, informal and formal meeting rooms and group study areas. In 2008 we were awarded the RAIA Commendation Award for the McCauley Place Learning Precinct which was based on this new approach to pedagogy.

innovative design

As the majority  of our projects are specialist and unique by their nature we have developed a design process which is aimed at capturing and understanding the functional complexities of he projects’ program and then using those requirements to “drive” the design. We do not seek to take our clients square pegs and force them into round holes. Rather, to continue the analogy we will take their square pegs and stack them in an innovative way which will deliver additional unexpected benefits.
