The existing Des Renford Aquatic Centre has been established in the Maroubra Area for nearly 50 years. BHA were engaged to design and document a fitness centre, located at the front of the existing Aquatic Centre, providing a new face to the popular centre and extend the training and exercise programs available. The new facility is a two story building which houses a new reception area, aerobics studio, administration area and creche for over forty children on the ground floor. The new reception area leads to the existing building, where a new cafe has been designed for use of the patrons.
The upper floor of the new facility provides 1000m2 of cardiovascular, weights and fixed cycle training. The upper floor has been designed with views to the north over the existing Heffron Park Sporting fields.
As the site for the new facility was a triangulated shape located between the existing buildings and the main carpark, the shape of the new building required an innovative solution to address the connection to the existing building, ease of access from the carpark, privacy from the adjacent residents and views to the north. The design solution was to provide a new building with a figure ‘8’ shape, which allowed a perfect connection between the existing buildings and carpark, as well as creating a landmark element which will become a major feature for the Heffron Park Precinct and Randwick Council Community.
